Objective
The goal of this study was to see how well an automated digital health program could lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to a control group that did not receive specific treatment.
Background
Over 300 million people globally may have brain changes that lead to Alzheimer’s disease long before they show any symptoms. Research suggests that 45% of dementia cases could potentially be prevented by addressing lifestyle factors. There is growing evidence that a combination of strategies can help those at risk. With the number of Alzheimer’s cases increasing, we need scalable solutions. Digital tools can provide a cost-effective way to deliver these interventions widely.
Methods
The study used an online tool called RetainYourBrain that helps users identify their risk factors, suggests improvements, and tracks their progress over six months. The trial included 987 participants aged 53 and older with a family history of Alzheimer’s. We compared the results of those using the program to those in a control group that did not use it.
Results
Both groups started with similar characteristics. Most participants were married, well-educated, and predominantly White, with an average age of about 64.2 years. After six months, those using the RetainYourBrain program showed a significant decrease in their Alzheimer’s risk score compared to the control group.
Conclusions
RetainYourBrain effectively encourages changes in lifestyle that can lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This software offers a convenient and cost-effective way to help people reduce their risk, making it easier for more individuals to access this type of care than through traditional appointments.
