Objective
The study aimed to understand how the order of treatment—using stimulant medication and behavioral parent training—affects outcomes for children and mothers in families with multiple cases of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Methods
Mothers with ADHD and their children showing high ADHD symptoms participated in the study. Thirty-five mother-child pairs were randomly assigned to four treatment sequences: MED MED, BPT-BPT, MED-BPT, and BPT MED. The study measured child ADHD symptoms, child impairment, maternal ADHD symptoms, and parenting skills at week 16.
Results
The sequence that started with behavioral parent training followed by medication showed the best results for reducing child ADHD symptoms and impairment. The sequences involving medication had similar effects on mothers’ ADHD symptoms. Starting with behavioral training also led to better positive parenting outcomes, while negative parenting outcomes improved with both BPT-MED and BPT-BPT sequences.
Conclusions
This pilot study suggests that combining treatments might be beneficial for families dealing with multiple ADHD cases. Starting with behavioral training before medication could be the most effective approach. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.
