Tooth sensitivity and whitening effect of an in-office bleaching gel containing 2% sodium fluoride: a randomized triple-blind clinical trial

Study Overview

This study looked at how adding sodium fluoride (NaF) to a bleaching gel affects tooth sensitivity and whitening results. The goal was to see if NaF could help with sensitivity while still providing effective whitening.

Study Design

32 patients participated in the study, with two sections of their mouths treated differently. One side received a bleaching gel containing 40% hydrogen peroxide (control), while the other side received the same gel but with an added 2% NaF (intervention). Treatments lasted for 45 minutes, and sensitivity was measured before and after treatment at various time points (immediately, 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, and 90 days).

Results

Out of the 32 patients, 29 completed the study. Key findings include:

  • Both groups saw a significant decrease in cold and spontaneous tooth sensitivity over 90 days.
  • Only the group using NaF showed a significant decrease in sensitivity to touch.
  • At 90 days, the NaF group had significantly lower cold sensitivity compared to the control group.
  • There was no significant difference in whitening effectiveness between the two groups.

Conclusions

Adding 2% NaF to the bleaching gel helped reduce cold sensitivity after 90 days, without affecting the whitening results negatively. This suggests NaF can be beneficial for patients concerned about sensitivity during teeth whitening treatments.

Practical Healthcare Solutions

For clinics and patients considering in-office teeth whitening:

  • Set clear goals to reduce tooth sensitivity while achieving effective whitening.
  • Consider using bleaching gels with 2% NaF for patients who experience sensitivity.
  • Monitor and evaluate outcomes to ensure patient satisfaction and comfort.

Next Steps

To implement findings from this study:

  • Start with a pilot project using the NaF-enhanced gel.
  • Track patient results and feedback to measure real-world impact.
