UVESCREEN1: Study Overview

What is the Study About?

This study focuses on children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) who are at risk of developing a serious eye condition called anterior uveitis. This condition can lead to blindness and often shows no symptoms, making early detection crucial.

Why is This Important?

Currently, children with JIA must undergo eye exams every three months at specialized centers, which can be far from their homes. This study aims to explore a new method for detecting uveitis using Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT), which is more convenient and effective than the standard slit lamp examination (SLE).

Study Details

  • Participants: 80 children aged 2 to 12 diagnosed with JIA in the last year.
  • Exclusions: Children with existing uveitis or other eye issues, or those unable to participate.
  • Methods: Participants will be randomly assigned to either the standard SLE or the AS-OCT method for eye exams.
  • Follow-Up: All participants will have standard eye exams at 6 and 12 months.

What Will Be Measured?

The study will assess:

  • Feasibility: How many participants join and stay in the study.
  • Clinical Outcomes: The number of children diagnosed with uveitis or other eye disorders after 12 months.
  • Quality of Life: Using the PedsQL tool to measure children’s well-being.
  • Resource Use: Evaluating the efficiency of both methods.

Next Steps

The findings will help determine if AS-OCT can be a viable alternative to SLE, paving the way for a larger trial in the future.
