Background
There are not many approved treatments for aggression and agitation in dementia patients. Although antipsychotics and benzodiazepines are often used, they can have serious side effects. Weighted blankets may offer a non-drug option to help reduce agitation in these patients.
Objective
This study aims to explore how weighted blankets affect aggression and agitation in hospitalized dementia patients.
Methods
We will conduct a pilot study with 30 hospitalized patients diagnosed with dementia who display agitation. Patients will be randomly assigned to either receive a weighted blanket for three nights or continue with regular care. We will measure changes in agitation using the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI-O) and other indicators like symptom severity, sleep hours, and medication use.
Results
Enrollment started on April 23, 2023, and by November 2024, 24 participants have joined the study. We will analyze the data once all participants are enrolled, expecting to finish by March 2026.
Conclusions
This study will provide insights into how weighted blankets can help manage agitation in dementia patients, potentially easing hospital stays and reducing caregiver stress.
