Protocol for a Double-Blind, Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Insomnia in college students is often overlooked despite its impact on health and wellbeing. Improving sleep quality through targeted interventions can reduce the risk of related health issues. Qigong exercises, specifically Three-circle Post Standing (TCPS), have shown promise in enhancing sleep quality and relieving insomnia by integrating body, breath, and mind.

Objectives: This clinical trial aims to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and therapeutic efficacy of TCPS in improving sleep quality and quality of life in college students with insomnia. Additionally, it seeks to explore the neurophysiological and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying TCPS and assess its long-term efficacy.

Methods: The trial will involve a prospective, parallel, four-arm, double-blind randomized controlled study with 100 college students diagnosed with insomnia. Participants will receive 14 weeks of standardized TCPS training or sham-control Post Standing training. Efficacy outcomes will be assessed at baseline, eight weeks, and 14 weeks, with additional evaluations at four- and eight-week follow-ups.

Discussion: This trial holds promise for developing new therapeutic approaches for insomnia that can be easily implemented by college students. The neuro- and pathophysiological assessments will provide valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying TCPS.
