Dynamic Sequential Cross-Sectional Scanning Improves Detection of Congenital Heart Disease
Background
Prenatal ultrasound is the best method for diagnosing congenital heart disease in fetuses. To address issues with physician skills and hospital access, we suggest using a new technique called dynamic sequential cross-sectional scanning (SCS) for sonographers with less than 5 years of experience.
Methods
We trained twenty residents by splitting them into two groups. One group learned the traditional method from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), while the other group learned the SCS method. The training included:
- Creating a question bank for theoretical knowledge
- Using a video library for congenital heart disease (CHD) examples
- Developing an assessment scale
All trainees took a pre-training exam, received theory and skill training, and then completed a post-training assessment. We analyzed their knowledge, skills, and diagnostic abilities before and after training.
Results
After the training:
- Both groups showed significant improvements in their knowledge and diagnostic skills.
- Trainees could identify major structural abnormalities and provide accurate diagnoses.
- Both groups completed the required scans on time, but the SCS group was faster.
- The AIUM group showed better results in accuracy compared to the SCS group.
Conclusion
SCS is an effective and quick method for fetal cardiac scanning. We recommend promoting its use among echocardiographers.
