It investigated whether adiponectin or other biomarkers mediate the effect of body mass index (BMI) on postmenopausal breast cancer risk in a cohort study nested in the IBIS-II Prevention Trial.
Key Findings: The results showed that both the 12-month increase in adiponectin and BMI were associated with breast cancer risk, with a 40% reduction in risk for women with a 12-month increase in adiponectin. The study also observed a significantly higher risk of breast cancer events in obese women with decreased adiponectin.
Implications: The findings suggest that raising adiponectin levels could be an attractive target for postmenopausal breast cancer prevention.
