AI-enhanced guidance demonstrated improvement in novices’ Apical-4-chamber and Apical-5-chamber views

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can make learning how to perform cardiac ultrasounds easier. It provides real-time guidance on how to handle the ultrasound probe, helping users get better images for diagnosis. This study examines how AI tools can help new users learn cardiac ultrasound more effectively.

Study Overview

This study involved a controlled trial with participants who took a six-hour course on cardiac ultrasound. After the course, they took a proficiency exam. One group used AI tools that gave real-time feedback during their training, while the other group only received help from instructors.

Results

A total of 44 participants took part: 21 used the AI tools, and 23 relied on instructors. The AI group showed better results in two types of ultrasound views: the Apical-4-chamber and the Apical-5-chamber views. They scored an average of 88%, while the non-AI group scored 76%. However, it took the AI group longer to finish the exam, averaging 401 seconds compared to 348 seconds for the other group.

Discussion

Using AI-based feedback helped learners perform better in challenging ultrasound views. This could help overcome some difficulties faced during traditional training. Further studies are needed to understand the long-term benefits of using AI in training.

Measurable Outcomes

Based on the trial results, AI-enhanced guidance can improve how new users perform cardiac ultrasound, specifically in obtaining clear Apical-4-chamber and Apical-5-chamber images. This can lead to better clinical outcomes for patients.

Opportunities for Clinics

  • Define Clear Goals: Use AI tools to improve proficiency in specific ultrasound views.
  • Select Suitable AI Tools: Choose AI solutions that meet clinical needs and enhance specific tasks.
  • Implement Gradually: Start with a pilot project using AI and track the results to understand its real-world impact.
