Clinical Manifestations
Study Overview
This study looked at how well computerized cognitive training (CCT) works when combined with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for patients with late-life depression (LLD).
Method
The research took place from May 5, 2021, to April 21, 2023. Patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder were divided into two groups:
- CCT and SSRIs: 57 patients
- SSRIs and Control: 61 patients
They received treatment for up to 12 weeks. The main focus was to see changes in cognitive function, measured by the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog).
Results
In total, 118 patients were analyzed. Both groups showed significant improvement in cognitive function over 12 weeks (P < 0.001). However, the CCT and SSRIs group had a greater improvement compared to the control group:
- ADAS-Cog improvement: Greater in CCT and SSRIs group (P < 0.001).
- Depression symptoms: More improvement in the CCT and SSRIs group (P < 0.001).
Common side effects included dry mouth, drowsiness, and constipation, with no significant difference in side effects between the two groups.
Conclusion
CCT combined with SSRIs is effective and well-tolerated for patients with LLD and cognitive impairment.
