Effectiveness of a low-glycaemic-index formula on post-gastrectomy hypoglycaemia in patients with gastric cancer: randomized crossover study

Background

Patients who have had stomach surgery often face issues like low blood sugar after meals and at night. Currently, they have to manage these problems on their own. This study looks at how nutrition can help improve these low blood sugar levels in patients with stomach cancer.

Study Method

This study involved patients aged 20-80 who had stomach cancer and had surgery 1-5 years prior. They consumed a special drink that is low in carbohydrates and high in healthy fats, 30 minutes after meals and before bed, for 14 days. We measured how often their blood sugar levels dropped below 70 mg/dl and how variable their blood sugar levels were.

Results

A total of 38 patients participated. For those who had total stomach removal, the time their blood sugar was too low during the day and night remained high. However, for those who had partial stomach removal, their night-time low blood sugar improved significantly. Daytime low blood sugar levels did not show improvement.

Conclusion

The special drink helped reduce night-time low blood sugar but did not affect daytime levels. More research is needed to find better nutritional solutions for these patients.

Next Steps for Clinics and Patients

Based on the study results, clinics can:

  • Set clear goals for managing low blood sugar in patients.
  • Use AI tools to track and improve patient outcomes.
  • Start with small pilot projects to test new nutritional strategies.
