Effectiveness of an educational intervention on the components of the metabolic syndrome of adults with type 2 diabetes: non-randomized clinical trial

Objective

To assess how effective an educational program is in improving health for adults with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Methods

We conducted a study with 51 adults (average age 48.7 years; 86.3% women) diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Participants were divided into two groups: one received the educational program (26 people), and the other did not (25 people). The program lasted six months and included seven workshops led by nurses. We measured improvements in metabolic syndrome components and tracked changes at the beginning and after six months.

Results

The educational program led to significant improvements:

  • Lower glucose levels (p=0.001)
  • Higher levels of good cholesterol (p=0.001)

Additionally, the average metabolic syndrome score decreased in the group that participated in the program, while it increased in the control group (p=0.033). By the end of the study, 11.5% of those in the program no longer met the criteria for metabolic syndrome.

Conclusion

A nurse-led educational program effectively improved glucose and good cholesterol levels in adults with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, while also reducing the number of metabolic syndrome components.

Opportunities for Clinics and Patients

Based on the trial data, clinics can:

  • Set clear goals for improving health outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes.
  • Implement educational programs similar to the one tested in the study.
  • Use AI tools to track patient progress and tailor interventions.

Next Steps

Start a pilot project to test the educational program in your clinic. Monitor results and adjust the program as needed to maximize its impact.
