Effectiveness of Intra-Oral Botulinum Toxin Injection for Myofascial Pain
Study Overview
This study compares two methods of injecting botulinum toxin for treating myofascial pain in the masseter muscle: intra-oral and extra-oral techniques.
Objective
The goal was to see which injection method is more effective in reducing pain and improving quality of life for patients with myofascial trigger points.
Methods
42 patients with myofascial pain participated in this trial. They were randomly divided into two groups: one received intra-oral injections, and the other received extra-oral injections. Each patient received 0.1 ml of botulinum-A toxin, guided by ultrasound. We monitored pain levels, mouth opening, and quality of life for six months after the injections.
Results
- Pain Levels: The extra-oral group reported higher pain scores throughout the study.
- Mouth Opening: The intra-oral group had significantly better mouth opening for the first three months.
- Quality of Life: Patients in the intra-oral group reported a much higher quality of life at both three and six months.
Conclusion
The intra-oral injection technique is more effective for treating myofascial pain in the masseter muscle. It provides better pain relief, improves mouth opening, and enhances overall quality of life compared to the extra-oral method.
Clinical Significance
This technique reduces the need for additional injections, saves costs, and improves patients’ quality of life.
