Effectiveness of King’s Theory of Goal Attainment in Blood Glucose Management
Overview
Diabetes is a major health issue worldwide, with millions affected. In China, around 140 million people have diabetes, and many struggle to follow their treatment plans. This study focuses on helping newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients manage their blood sugar levels effectively using an online teaching method and a supportive nursing platform based on King’s Theory of Goal Attainment.
Study Objective
The main goal of this research was to evaluate how well King’s Theory of Goal Attainment works in managing blood glucose for new diabetes patients. It aimed to create a teamwork model involving doctors, nurses, and patients to improve diabetes care.
Methods
Conducted at Changzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital from January 2022 to February 2023, this study divided eligible patients into two groups: a control group receiving standard care and an online feedback group participating in an interactive program based on King’s Theory. This program included goal planning, video lessons, quizzes, and support for correcting misunderstandings about diabetes. Health monitoring was also conducted through the online platform.
Results
After 24 weeks, the online feedback group showed significant improvements in key health markers, including:
- Lower fasting plasma glucose
- Reduced 2-hour postprandial glucose
- Decrease in hemoglobin A1c levels
Additionally, this group experienced less anxiety related to low blood sugar and improved emotional well-being. In contrast, the control group had higher levels in these areas.
Conclusions
The online teaching method based on King’s Theory effectively improves blood sugar control and reduces anxiety for newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients. This approach should be widely adopted in clinical practices to enhance patient care.
