Effects of athletic tape on orofacial pain and jaw movements after 24 hours of use: a randomized clinical trial

Effects of Athletic Tape on Orofacial Pain and Jaw Movements: Clinical Trial Results

Summary

Researchers conducted a clinical trial to investigate the effects of athletic tape on orofacial pain and jaw movements in adults with temporomandibular disorder. The study involved 22 participants who were randomly assigned to two groups.

Method

Participants in Group A had athletic tape applied with 40% stretch to the masseter muscle, while Group B received the tape without stretching. Pain sensation and mandibular movements were assessed using specific criteria and measurements before and after the application of the athletic tape.

Results

Group A experienced pain relief in the temporomandibular joint on the right and at the origin of the left masseter muscle. Group B showed a reduction in pain in the left anterior temporal region. However, there were no significant differences in mandibular movements between the two groups after the intervention.

Conclusion

Using athletic tape over the masseter muscle with stretching for 24 hours provided relief from pain in specific areas. However, there was no significant impact on mandibular movements.
