Effects of Fructan and Gluten on Gut Microbiota in Non-Celiac Gluten/Wheat Sensitivity
Practical Solutions and Value Highlights
Individuals with non-celiac gluten/wheat sensitivity (NCGWS) often experience improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms with a gluten-free diet. This study aimed to investigate the effects of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and gluten on gut microbiota and related factors in NCGWS patients.
The study found that FOS-fructans induced more gastrointestinal symptoms than gluten in NCGWS patients. However, the composition and function of the gut microbiota did not substantially explain these differences. It was noted that individual variations in baseline bacterial composition/function may influence the gastrointestinal symptom response to both FOS-fructans and gluten.
Furthermore, the reduction in a specific bacterial group, E. coprostanoligenes, following the FOS-fructan challenge was associated with increased gastrointestinal pain. This suggests that attention should be given to these bacteria in future trials investigating the impact of dietary treatments on gastrointestinal symptoms.
Overall, the study highlights the importance of understanding individual variations in gut microbiota and their potential influence on gastrointestinal symptoms in NCGWS patients.
