Effects of the transtheoretical model-based self-management program on behavioral change in persons with epilepsy: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Study on Self-Management for People with Epilepsy

Introduction

Self-management tools can make epilepsy treatment more effective and accessible. However, we need more long-term data to prove their benefits. The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) helps tailor self-management to where individuals are in their behavioral change journey. This model aims to address specific needs, reduce information overload, minimize drawbacks, and improve treatment effectiveness for those living with epilepsy.

Methods and Analysis

This study will be a randomized, double-blind clinical trial with two groups of adults diagnosed with epilepsy.

– The **intervention group** will receive a TTM-based self-management program and traditional treatment.
– The **control group** will get traditional treatment only.

Participants will first assess their behavioral change stage, which will guide personalized support strategies. They will also watch weekly 30-minute educational videos about epilepsy. We plan to enroll **160 adults** with a diagnosis of epilepsy for at least six months and currently on medication.

Data will be collected using various assessments before, and then at 1, 3, and 6 months after the intervention.

Discussion

Current self-management strategies mostly focus on knowledge and psychological factors, leading to mixed results in past studies. This research aims to improve self-management by combining TTM with proven methods. By defining stages of behavioral change, we plan a clear intervention protocol that will contribute to standardized, evidence-based care for epilepsy.

Important Notes about Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are essential for developing safe and effective treatments. To enhance their use in everyday medicine, we’ve created **DocSym**, an AI-powered platform that consolidates ICD-11 standards, clinical protocols, and research into one accessible resource for healthcare providers.
