Efficacy of Hamstring Stretching, Ultrasound Therapy, and Pressure Pain Threshold for Masseter Muscle in TMJ Dysfunction Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

AIM

This study looks at how adding stretching of the hamstring muscles affects pain and mouth opening in people with jaw pain (TMD) when combined with standard treatments like ultrasound therapy.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We studied 56 participants aged 18 to 35 years with TMD, randomly dividing them into two groups. The first group (Experimental Group) received hamstring stretching along with ultrasound therapy, while the second group (Control Group) only received ultrasound therapy. Pain levels were measured before and after five treatment sessions in one week.

RESULTS

Both groups reported less pain and better mouth opening after the treatments. In the Experimental Group, pain levels dropped significantly from an average of 6.8 to 2.9, while the Control Group’s pain levels dropped from 6.7 to 4.1. The Experimental Group’s mouth opening increased from 31.4 mm to 39.8 mm, compared to the Control Group’s increase from 31.2 mm to 36.1 mm. Overall, the Experimental Group had better results.

CONCLUSION

Incorporating hamstring stretching with ultrasound therapy was more effective for reducing TMD pain and improving mouth opening than using ultrasound therapy alone. This suggests that adding hamstring flexibility exercises could lead to better recovery for TMD patients.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

These results stress the advantages of including hamstring stretching in physiotherapy for TMD. With the observed improvements in pain and mouth function, healthcare providers should consider adding these exercises to treatment plans for better patient outcomes.
