Study Overview: This study investigates the benefits of modified limbal stem cell transplantation (Modified LSC) combined with bandage contact lens (BCL) implantation in treating pterygium.
Objective:
To assess how effective Modified LSC and BCL are in improving outcomes after pterygium surgery.
Methods:
A total of 479 patients with primary pterygium participated in this study from March 2019 to March 2023. They were divided into three groups:
- Group A: 89 patients—no surgery, just outpatient follow-up.
- Group B: 195 patients—received LSC transplantation with sutures and BCL.
- Group C: 195 patients—received Modified LSC transplantation with BCL.
We compared their symptoms, healing progress, complications, tear film stability, intraocular pressure, inflammation, and vision quality over time.

- Group C showed quicker recovery and fewer symptoms compared to Group B.
- Tear film break-up time improved significantly in Group C after surgery, almost matching Group A by three months.
- Intraocular pressure was highest in Groups B and C after one week due to steroid drops but decreased in Group C by one month.
- Inflammatory markers were lower in Group C compared to Group B.
- Group C had better vision and quality of life scores at one year after surgery.
Conclusion:
Modified LSC transplantation with BCL is a more effective treatment for pterygium and is recommended for broader use.
