Study Overview: SIMUL-CHD Trial
Purpose
Effective communication between doctors and patients is essential, especially when discussing serious conditions like congenital heart diseases. To address communication challenges faced by medical professionals, we are introducing a simulation-based training program for pediatric cardiology trainees. This study will work with associations that support families of children with congenital heart disease, showing how targeted training can improve compassionate care in healthcare settings.
Methodology
This study is a multicenter, open-label randomized controlled trial taking place in pediatric cardiac units and simulation centers across 10 universities in France. It will involve pediatric cardiology trainees, including fellows and specialists. The training will use standardized patients to help improve communication skills during patient consultations. Participants will include patients and caregivers from the “Petit Cœur de Beurre” association. The main focus is to assess the quality of communication skills among physicians, with evaluations done by a committee that will not know which trainees underwent simulation training versus traditional training. We will also look at how the training affects empathy and anxiety in young pediatric cardiologists.
Discussion
While simulation-based training is effective for teaching technical skills, its role in enhancing communication skills in pediatric cardiology is yet to be fully explored. By involving experienced parents, we can gain valuable insights into the emotional challenges families face when dealing with congenital heart disease.
