Supporting Community Lung Cancer Screening
A web-based decision aid to help informed decision making
Background
The National Lung Screening Trial offers the promise of reducing lung cancer deaths. However, getting communities engaged in lung cancer screening (LCS) has been difficult. New policies encourage shared decision-making and using tools to help people make informed choices about screening. This study tested LuCaS CHOICES, a web-based aid that provides accurate information, helps develop communication skills, and clarifies personal preferences for lung cancer screening, which is vital for quality implementation.
Methods
This study used a randomized trial with two groups to check if LuCaS CHOICES is practical and well-received compared to the National Cancer Institute’s LCS website. Researchers collected self-report data at three points: before use (PRE), two weeks later (POST), and four months later (FOL). They also tracked participant enrollment and access to the interventions to see if the study setup could support a larger trial in the future.
Results
Participants using LuCaS CHOICES (n = 25) and the NCI website (n = 25) both reported similar and positive experiences with the interventions, exceeding initial expectations. The methods partly met goals for participant enrollment and retention, but enrollment was slower than anticipated, and engagement with the digital tools needed improvement.
Conclusions
Both tools were feasible and acceptable for participants. The methods used helped achieve retention and data collection goals. However, suggestions to enhance participant engagement should be considered before further trials. The next steps involve conducting a randomized clinical trial to assess how LuCaS CHOICES affects informed decision-making and aligns with personal screening preferences, aiming to improve lung cancer screening in communities.
