Enhancing Positive Adaptation of Immigrant Families in Hong Kong: Clinical Trial Results
Overview
Our research team conducted a randomized controlled trial to enhance positive adaptation among immigrant parents and children in Hong Kong. We developed two parallel interventions aiming to address psychological and sociocultural adaptation difficulties faced by immigrant families.
Interventions
Two interventions were conducted: the emotion regulation (ER) arm focused on psychological adaptation by reducing parent-child conflicts and improving emotions, while the information provision (IP) arm targeted sociocultural adaptation by increasing participants’ knowledge about Hong Kong.
Findings
Results showed that parents in the ER arm exhibited improved positive affect, while children reported decreased parent-child conflicts compared to the IP arm. In the IP arm, parents and children increased their knowledge, and parents decreased sociocultural adaptation difficulties more than their counterparts in the ER arm.
Key Insight
Moderation analyses revealed that parents and children with elevated baseline depressive symptoms obtained greater benefits from both interventions. Notably, parents in the ER arm experienced improvements in negative affect and adaptation difficulties, while children showed improvements in parent-child conflict and affect. Similarly, parents in the IP arm saw improvements in negative affect and sociocultural adaptation difficulties, and children experienced improvements in negative affect.
Implications
Future studies should focus on developing and providing parent-child parallel interventions targeting psychological and sociocultural adaptations for parents and children with heightened baseline depressive symptoms to facilitate their positive adaptation in Hong Kong.
