Evaluation of residual carious dentin detection methods after cavity preparation: a randomized clinical trial

Evaluation of Residual Carious Dentin Detection Methods

Study Overview

This study examines different methods for detecting leftover caries after tooth cavity preparation. The goal is to remove only the harmful caries while preserving healthy dentin.

Methods Used

The trial involved three methods:

  • Visual-Tactile Method (Group A)
  • Caries Detector Dye (CDD – Group B)
  • Laser Fluorescence (LF – Group C)

Ninety patients participated, each with a deep carious lesion. They were randomly assigned to one of the three methods after the initial cavity preparation.

Key Findings

  • The Visual-Tactile Method showed 100% specificity.
  • The CDD had 100% sensitivity and 92.9% specificity.
  • The DIAGNOdent (LF method) achieved 100% sensitivity and specificity, with perfect agreement with bacterial tests.

The DIAGNOdent method outperformed the others, making it the most reliable for detecting residual caries.

Conclusion

All three methods effectively identified residual caries, but the DIAGNOdent provided the most accurate results.

Clinical Application

This research is crucial for improving dental care by ensuring thorough caries removal while preserving tooth structure.
