Carboxytherapy in management of acne flare in patients with moderate to severe acne vulgaris under treatment with oral isotretinoin: a case series

Recent research published in the Archives of Dermatological Research explored the effectiveness of carboxytherapy in managing acne flare while patients are undergoing treatment with oral isotretinoin for moderate to severe acne vulgaris.

Oral isotretinoin is widely used to treat acne and prevent associated scarring and psychological issues. However, one of its side effects is an initial flare-up of acne, which can worsen skin lesions and increase scarring risk. This study examined a group of 10 patients with moderate to severe facial acne, where carboxytherapy was applied to one side of the face alongside isotretinoin treatment.

The evaluation of treatment effectiveness included the counting of acne lesions and assessing patient satisfaction. Findings demonstrated that carboxytherapy significantly reduced papule counts and improved patient satisfaction compared to isotretinoin alone. Although improvements in other types of lesions like comedones, pustules, and cysts were noted, they were not statistically significant. Importantly, carboxytherapy also contributed to reduced scar severity, with no significant side effects reported.

This suggests that carboxytherapy could serve as a valuable addition to isotretinoin therapy, enhancing results and lowering the risk of scarring.

To better utilize these findings in clinical settings, practitioners can identify areas for improvement from the trial data. Focus on measurable outcomes, such as speeding up diagnosis, reducing treatment costs, and enhancing overall patient care.
