Cost-effectiveness of an online supervised group physical and mental health rehabilitation programme for adults with post-COVID-19 condition after hospitalisation for COVID-19: the REGAIN RCT

Cost-Effectiveness of a Rehabilitation Program for Post-COVID-19 Patients

Background

After the COVID-19 pandemic, many people suffer from ongoing physical and mental health issues. Currently, there is no specific treatment for the various symptoms of post-COVID-19 condition. Rehabilitation programs may help improve the quality of life for these patients. This study examines the cost-effectiveness of a rehabilitation program compared to standard care for people who were hospitalized due to COVID-19.

Methods

We evaluated costs and health outcomes in a randomized controlled trial from the perspective of the UK National Health Service (NHS). We collected data on resources used and quality of life at three, six, and twelve months using specific questionnaires. We calculated the costs and health benefits, reporting them as an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER).

Results

Over 12 months, the rehabilitation program had incremental costs of £305 and a gain of 0.026 quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). The ICER was £11,941 per QALY, indicating that the program is cost-effective. There is an 84% chance that this intervention is a good use of NHS resources compared to the £30,000 per QALY threshold.

Conclusion

This evaluation suggests that post-COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized should be offered this rehabilitation program, as it makes efficient use of NHS resources. With fewer hospitalizations for COVID-19 now, it may also be beneficial to study this program for non-hospitalized patients.
