Background
Chronic Plantar Fasciitis (CPF) is a condition that causes persistent foot pain and is often linked with anxiety and fear of movement. An approach called Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) has shown potential in helping with these mental aspects, but there hasn’t been enough strong evidence on how well it works when combined with physiotherapy for CPF.
Purpose
This study aims to find out if adding Pain Neuroscience Education to physiotherapy can improve the management of Chronic Plantar Fasciitis.
Methods
In this study, 160 participants aged 18 to 44 with a diagnosis of Chronic Plantar Fasciitis will be involved. They will be randomly split into two groups:
- The first group will receive standard physiotherapy sessions lasting 45 minutes.
- The second group will receive the same physiotherapy plus a 15-minute weekly session of Pain Neuroscience Education.
We will measure outcomes such as:
- Morning pain levels (using a Numeric Rating Scale)
- Foot and ankle function (using the Foot Function Index)
- Catastrophic thinking about pain (using the Pain Catastrophizing Scale)
- Fear of movement (using the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia)
- Dynamic balance (using the Y-Balance Test)
Data will be collected at the start, after 3 weeks, and after 6 weeks.
Results
The data will be analyzed to see if there are significant differences between the two groups and within each group over time. Various statistical tests will be used based on data distribution.
Discussion
The results from this study are expected to provide insights into how effectively combining Pain Neuroscience Education with conventional physiotherapy can help manage Chronic Plantar Fasciitis.
Measurable Outcomes
Clear goals and measurable outcomes will be established based on the trial data to help clinics and patients understand the benefits of this combined approach.
Implementation
Clinics are encouraged to start with pilot projects using AI tools to track the effectiveness of this combined treatment method. By analyzing real-world results, healthcare providers can make informed decisions about integrating these solutions into their practices.
