Effectiveness of the Smoke Free Smartphone App for Smoking Cessation

This study examined how effective the Smoke Free app is in helping people quit smoking compared to not receiving any support.

Digital tools, like apps, can provide affordable ways to help people stop smoking.
Study Objective
We wanted to see if offering the Smoke Free app would help smokers quit more effectively than just following up with them.
Methods
In this trial, 3,143 motivated adult smokers were recruited online. They were divided into two groups:
- Intervention Group: Received the Smoke Free app and follow-up.
- Comparator Group: Received follow-up only.
Both groups were encouraged to try quitting smoking. We measured their success in quitting at 6 months.
Results
Only 41.9% of participants completed the follow-up after 7 months. The results showed:
- No significant difference in quitting rates between the two groups (6.8% for the app group vs. 7.0% for the follow-up only).
- When focusing only on those who downloaded the app, 12.7% reported quitting, which is 80% higher than the comparator group.
Conclusions
Offering the Smoke Free app alone did not significantly help smokers quit compared to follow-up only. However, those who used the app had a higher chance of quitting.
