Effects of short-chain fatty acid-butyrate supplementation on expression of circadian-clock genes, sleep quality, and inflammation in patients with active ulcerative colitis: a double-blind randomized controlled trial

Effects of Butyrate Supplementation on Ulcerative Colitis Patients

Background

The study aimed to investigate the effects of sodium-butyrate supplementation on the expression of circadian-clock genes, inflammation, sleep quality, and life quality in active ulcerative colitis (UC) patients.

Methods

36 active UC patients were randomly divided to receive sodium-butyrate or placebo for 12 weeks. The expression of circadian clock genes, inflammation biomarkers, sleep quality, and IBD quality of life were assessed before and after the intervention.

Results

Sodium-butyrate supplementation significantly decreased the level of inflammation biomarkers and upregulated the expression of circadian-clock genes. It also improved sleep quality and quality of life for the patients.

Conclusion

Butyrate may be an effective adjunct treatment for active UC patients by reducing inflammation, upregulating circadian-clock genes, and improving sleep quality and quality of life.

Practical Solutions and Value

Clinical trials like this one are crucial for developing safe and effective treatments for patients. The results of this trial suggest that butyrate supplementation could be a valuable addition to the treatment of active UC patients, offering benefits in reducing inflammation, regulating circadian-clock genes, and improving sleep and quality of life.
