Immediate Effects of Kinesio Taping on Pain, Proprioception, and Posture
Background
Round shoulder posture (RSP) occurs when shoulders are positioned forward due to weak and tight muscles. This can lead to Subacromial Impingement Syndrome (SIS), causing pain during certain movements. This study looks at how Kinesio taping (KT) affects pain, body awareness (proprioception), and posture in individuals with RSP and SIS.
Methods
The study included 114 patients with RSP and SIS. We measured pain using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), proprioception with an inclinometer, and posture with The New York Posture Rating Chart (NYPRC). Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: one that received KT (Experimental Group – EG) and one that had a sham procedure (Sham Group – SG). Assessments were done before and after applying the Kinesio tape.
Results
The results showed significant improvements in the EG regarding pain (VAS scores, P = .002), proprioception during arm abduction (P = .023), and posture (NYPRC scores, P = .04) compared to the SG. However, there was no significant difference in proprioception during arm flexion (P > .05).
Conclusion
Kinesio taping provides immediate relief from pain and better shoulder alignment for those with RSP and chronic shoulder pain. This suggests that KT could be an effective treatment for managing symptoms of RSP and SIS, especially for pain and posture improvement.
