Predictors and Impact of Disclosure Efficacy Among Cancer Survivors
Background
Cancer survivors who talk about their diagnosis and experiences gain many benefits, including a better quality of life. Understanding what helps these survivors share their stories is important. One key factor is “disclosure efficacy,” which means feeling confident about sharing personal information.
Aims
In the first part of the study, researchers looked at survey results to find out what influences disclosure efficacy among cancer survivors. They also explored whether feeling confident about disclosure affects the willingness to share in the future. The second part tested if educating survivors about sharing their experiences could improve their disclosure efficacy.
Methods
The study involved 181 cancer survivors who took part in an online survey for the first study and a controlled test of educational materials for the second study.
Results
The first part of the study showed that survivors who had shared their experiences before felt more confident about sharing again. However, how others responded to their disclosures did not seem to affect this confidence. The second part did not find that reading educational materials increased confidence in sharing. Yet, some participants who received this information indicated a greater intention to use recommended sharing strategies.
Conclusions
The findings highlight the importance of disclosure efficacy for cancer survivors. They suggest the need for creating programs that boost this confidence and offer practice opportunities for sharing their experiences.
