The Effect of High-Intensity Interval Training on Quality of Life and Chemotherapy Side Effects in Women With Breast Cancer
Study Overview
This study focuses on how high-intensity interval training (HIIT) affects the quality of life and side effects of chemotherapy in women with breast cancer (BC). Women undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) often face various symptoms that can lower their quality of life (QoL).
Methods
A total of 56 women with locally advanced breast cancer participated in this study. They were divided into two groups: one group performed HIIT for 6 months, while the other followed standard care. The HIIT group engaged in 2 to 3 sessions per week, consisting of short bursts of intense exercise. Participants reported their quality of life and side effects weekly through online surveys.
Results
Out of the initial participants, data from 37 women were analyzed. The results showed:
- HIIT significantly reduced symptoms related to breast cancer (P = .048).
- It also helped lessen side effects from chemotherapy (P = .020).
- Common side effects included pain and sleep disturbances, affecting around 50% of participants in both groups.
- Women in the HIIT group reported fewer physical, social, and fatigue-related side effects compared to the control group.
Conclusions
HIIT is an effective exercise program that can improve quality of life and reduce some side effects of chemotherapy for women with breast cancer.
