The Renewing Intimacy and Sexuality Intervention for Female Cancer Survivors: A Feasibility Study
Purpose:
This study looked into a three-session program aimed at helping women with breast and gynecologic cancer in Singapore improve their intimacy and sexual health.
Method:
Women from outpatient oncology clinics filled out questionnaires about their marital and sexual distress. Those who reported any distress were invited to join the study and were randomly assigned to either receive the intervention right away or be placed on a waitlist. The study measured how many patients participated and completed the sessions, how satisfied they were, and any changes in their marital, sexual, and body image outcomes.
Results:
Out of 1101 patients, 24% reported marital or sexual distress. Forty-six eligible participants took part in the study. Most participants (88%) completed all three sessions. Every participant who finished the intervention was satisfied, and 97% would recommend it to others. A large majority (93%) felt the program was culturally sensitive, and 76% were willing to pay for it either out of pocket or through their national medical account. The outcomes showed small but positive changes in the expected areas.
Conclusions:
About 25% of women with breast or gynecologic cancer in Singapore experienced marital or sexual distress. While fewer patients participated than expected, those who did showed good engagement and high satisfaction with the intervention. This indicates a need for better awareness and access to sexual health care in cancer treatment settings.
