Effects of Intensive Lifestyle Changes on Alzheimer’s Disease Progression
Background
Research suggests that lifestyle factors may impact Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This study is the first of its kind to investigate whether intensive lifestyle changes can positively influence the progression of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early dementia due to AD.
Methods
This phase 2 trial involved individuals aged 45-90 with MCI or early dementia due to AD. Participants underwent a 20-week intensive multidomain lifestyle intervention compared to a wait-list usual care control group. The study assessed changes in cognitive and functional tests, plasma biomarkers, and the correlation between lifestyle and these measures.
Results
Fifty-one AD patients participated, with a mean age of 73.5. Significant improvements were observed in cognition and function measures after 20 weeks, with the intervention group showing positive changes compared to the control group. Plasma biomarkers and microbiome also showed positive responses to the intervention.
Conclusions
Comprehensive lifestyle changes may significantly improve cognition and function in many patients with MCI or early dementia due to AD.
