Embodied Cognition Driven Qigong: Managing Depression and Preventing Relapse in Substance Use Disorders
Objective
Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a major public health issue, with high relapse rates. This study aimed to explore factors that influence relapse and to test a Health Qigong intervention to help manage these issues.
Methods
We surveyed 398 male substance users to assess their depression, self-esteem, resilience, and likelihood of relapse. From this group, 60 participants with depression were selected for a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT). They were split into two groups: one group participated in a 12-week Health Qigong program, while the other group continued their usual activities.
Results
Our analysis showed that:
- Depression directly affects the likelihood of relapse.
- Depression also affects relapse indirectly through self-esteem and resilience.
- The Health Qigong program reduced depression, improved self-esteem, and increased resilience, leading to a lower chance of relapse.
Conclusion
This study highlights key factors that contribute to relapse in individuals with SUDs and introduces an effective, non-drug intervention. The Health Qigong program not only helps reduce relapse rates but also promotes better mental health. This approach combines traditional Chinese exercises with modern psychological practices, offering a well-rounded method for recovery.
Practical Solutions and Value
Our findings suggest that incorporating physical activity, like Health Qigong, can significantly improve mental health and support recovery from substance use disorders.
