Mindful Self-Compassion Smartphone Intervention for Worker Mental Health

Mental health issues among workers in Japan lead to significant losses for companies. Workers often face time constraints, limiting their access to psychological support. To address this, a smartphone app was developed to provide brief guided mindfulness meditation (MM) and self-compassion meditation (SCM) to improve mental health and work-related outcomes.
Study Design:
The study is an open-label, 3-arm randomized controlled trial. 200 participants were recruited, meeting specific inclusion criteria, and were randomly assigned to an SCM course, an MM course, or a waitlist group. Additionally, the participants were instructed to engage in daily self-help exercises lasting 6-12 minutes per day over 4 weeks.
Outcome Measures:
Primary outcomes to be assessed include psychological distress and job performance, while secondary outcomes include somatic symptoms, cognitive flexibility, self-esteem, self-compassion, perceived stress, well-being, emotion regulation, work engagement, anger, psychological safety, and creativity.
Results and Conclusion:
Recruitment began in December 2022, and the intervention and data collection concluded in late October 2023. The study aims to contribute to the development of effective self-care interventions that can enhance mental health and work performance, promoting mindful and self-compassionate attitudes when dealing with distress.
