An Incognito Standardized Patient Approach for Measuring and Reducing Intersectional Healthcare Stigma
Study Overview
This study focused on how stigma affects healthcare access for people living with HIV (PLWH) and men who have sex with men (MSM). We tested a training program for healthcare providers aimed at reducing this stigma.
Study Setting
The research took place in sexually transmitted disease clinics in Guangzhou, China.
Methods Used
We conducted a pilot cluster randomized control trial to see how effective the training was. Initially, we sent incognito standardized patients (SPs) to visit doctors and present specific cases. By changing the HIV status and sexual orientation of these cases, we could measure the stigma based on the quality of care provided. After the training, we sent SPs back to assess any changes in care quality.
Key Findings
- High feasibility and acceptability: 55 providers participated with no negative incidents.
- Improved testing offers for HIV-negative MSM.
- Better diagnostic efforts for HIV-positive MSM.
- Patient-centered care improved mainly for HIV-positive straight cases.
- Results showed variability, which is common in pilot studies.
Conclusions
The training helped reduce stigma in some areas of care, but more focus is needed on managing PLWH. Future training should enhance clinical skills specific to PLWH management.
Importance of Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are essential for creating safe and effective treatments. It’s vital to integrate their findings into everyday medical practice.
