Study Overview: Computerized vs. Manual Acupuncture for Knee Osteoarthritis
Background
Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common condition that leads to pain and difficulties in movement. Acupuncture might help, but the traditional way of choosing acupuncture points isn’t standardized. The Acugraph system uses computers to find these points, which may improve treatment accuracy.
Objective
This study will compare the benefits of computerized Acugraph-guided acupuncture with manually chosen acupuncture, both used alongside physiotherapy for treating KOA.
Methods
We will conduct a randomized, double-blind trial with 50 participants who have mild to moderate KOA. Participants will be divided into two groups:
- Group 1: 25 participants receiving Acugraph-guided acupuncture plus physiotherapy.
- Group 2: 25 participants receiving manually selected acupuncture plus physiotherapy.
Each group will attend 12 weekly sessions of 60 minutes each. We will measure outcomes, such as pain levels and mobility, at the start and right after the treatment period. We will analyze the changes to see how each method performed.
Expected Results
This study will help determine how effective computerized acupuncture is compared to the traditional manual method as part of physiotherapy for KOA.
